  • HISTORY ASPECTS:
  • The de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter was developed as a rugged, versatile twin-engine turboprop capable of operating from short and unimproved airfields. The Series 300 became one of the most successful versions, powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27 engines and well suited to regional passenger services in demanding environments. G-BVVK, construction number 666, was built in 1980 and was originally delivered to Norwegian regional airline Widerøe as LN-BEZ in February of that year. After approximately 14 years in Norway, the aircraft was acquired by Loganair and registered G-BVVK in December 1994.
  • G-BVVK became particularly recognizable after joining Loganair during the period when the Scottish airline operated as a British Airways franchise. Loganair's fleet was painted in British Airways Express colors, allowing the small Twin Otter to wear the distinctive British Airways Landor-era identity while performing regional services throughout Scotland. The aircraft arrived in the United Kingdom in January 1995 and was rolled out in full British Airways Express colors. Its career with the franchise continued for many years, making G-BVVK an interesting combination of a classic British Airways visual identity and a uniquely Scottish regional aircraft.
  • The Twin Otter's importance to Loganair was closely connected with the airline's service to Scotland's Highlands and Islands, where short runways, remote communities, and challenging weather made aircraft such as the DHC-6 particularly valuable. G-BVVK became associated with routes linking Glasgow with destinations including Barra and Tiree. Its operations also gave it a place in the history of Barra Airport, famous for its beach runway, where scheduled passenger services operate directly from the tidal sands. After the British Airways franchise ended in 2008, G-BVVK continued operating in Flybe colors before eventually returning to Loganair's own identity.
  • G-BVVK has had an exceptionally long commercial career. In 2017, the aircraft was involved in a runway excursion at Tiree during a scheduled Glasgow–Tiree passenger flight; the aircraft came to rest on the cross runway, but there were no injuries and no damage was reported. It subsequently returned to service and continued flying with Loganair. The aircraft later became known as “Spirit of Eilidh,” and its continuing career has made G-BVVK one of the best-known surviving Loganair Twin Otters.
  • This 1:200 scale model in Landor livery captures a distinctive chapter in British regional aviation history. Its combination of the rugged Twin Otter airframe, Scottish regional-service heritage, and iconic British Airways Landor-era colors makes it an especially appealing addition to collections focused on British Airways, Loganair, classic regional aircraft, or the unique aviation history of the Scottish Highlands and Islands.
