  • HISTORY ASPECTS:
  • The Airbus A350-900 is a long-haul widebody aircraft developed by Airbus as part of the A350 XWB family, incorporating a high proportion of composite materials, advanced aerodynamics, and Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. Lufthansa became one of the A350's major early operators, taking delivery of its first A350-900 in 2016. The aircraft became an important part of Lufthansa's long-haul fleet, particularly at Munich, where it was introduced as part of the airline's strategy to replace older widebody aircraft with more efficient, modern-generation jets. Lufthansa's own centennial history recognizes the A350-900 as one of the milestones in the airline's continuing fleet modernization.
  • For Lufthansa's 100th anniversary in 2026, an A350-900 was selected to represent the airline's modern long-haul fleet in a special commemorative livery. The aircraft chosen was D-AIXL, which received the striking anniversary design at the Airbus paint facility in Châteauroux, France, before arriving at Munich in early February 2026. It became one of a special group of Lufthansa aircraft created to celebrate 100 years since the founding of the first “Luft Hansa” in Berlin on January 6, 1926.
  • The special livery gives the A350-900 a dramatic appearance unlike Lufthansa's standard white-and-yellow scheme. Its fuselage is finished in deep Lufthansa blue and carries an enormous white crane, with the crane's wings visually extending into the aircraft's own wings. A large “100” appears on the left side of the fuselage, while “1926 | 2026” is displayed on the right, with another anniversary “100” placed on the underside. The design is an enlarged interpretation of Lufthansa's famous crane emblem, linking the airline's historic identity with its modern fleet.
  • D-AIXL also played a special role in Lufthansa's centennial celebrations beyond simply wearing the anniversary colors. On April 6, 2026—exactly 100 years after the first flights of the original Luft Hansa—the A350-900 departed Munich for Berlin as part of Lufthansa's recreation of its inaugural-flight history. The aircraft operated a special anniversary flight carrying Lufthansa employees and their partners, while a Boeing 787-9 simultaneously flew from Frankfurt to Berlin. D-AIXL's participation connected one of Lufthansa's newest long-haul aircraft with the company's earliest aviation history.
  • This 1:400 scale model in the 100 Years anniversary livery captures one of the most distinctive aircraft in Lufthansa's centennial fleet. The combination of the elegant A350-900 silhouette, deep-blue fuselage, enormous white “XXL Crane,” and special “100” and “1926 | 2026” markings makes this model an outstanding addition to collections of Lufthansa aircraft, Airbus widebodies, and historically significant airline liveries.
