  • The Airbus A320neo represents the next generation of Airbus’ highly successful A320 family, incorporating new-generation engines, aerodynamic improvements, and other technologies designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions compared with earlier A320 models. Lufthansa became one of the early major European operators of the A320neo, integrating the aircraft into its short- and medium-haul fleet as part of its long-term modernization strategy. The type has become an important part of Lufthansa’s European network, combining the familiar A320 family design with improved efficiency and passenger comfort.
  • D-AING is an Airbus A320neo named “Kerpen.” The aircraft is part of Lufthansa’s short- and medium-haul fleet and became especially notable in 2026 when it was selected to wear one of the airline’s special 100th-anniversary liveries. Lufthansa traces the founding of the original Deutsche Luft Hansa to 1926, making 2026 the centennial year. The anniversary program was designed to connect the airline’s long history with its modern fleet, and D-AING became one of the most distinctive representatives of that celebration.
  • The anniversary transformation gave D-AING a dramatically different appearance from Lufthansa’s standard livery. Its fuselage was painted in a deep blue finish and carries an oversized white Lufthansa crane whose wings visually merge with the aircraft’s wings. The design also incorporates a large “100” on the left side and “1926 | 2026” on the right, while another “100” appears on the underside of the aircraft. D-AING was repainted at Norwich, England, in January 2026, with the work taking approximately eleven days before the aircraft returned to Lufthansa service.
  • D-AING was selected as the A320neo representative of Lufthansa’s anniversary fleet, which brings the special design to different aircraft types across the airline’s short-, medium-, and long-haul operations. The aircraft returned to regular service after its repaint and made its first anniversary-livery flight from Norwich to Frankfurt on January 19, 2026, before beginning normal Lufthansa operations. As a modern commercial airliner, D-AING has no military combat history; its significance comes from its role in Lufthansa’s contemporary fleet and its place in the airline’s centennial celebration.
