  • HISTORY ASPECTS:
  • The Republic F-105F Thunderchief was the two-seat trainer and Wild Weasel conversion of the famed F-105 strike fighter, an aircraft that became synonymous with high-speed, low-level attack missions during the Vietnam War. Originally designed as a supersonic nuclear strike aircraft, the Thunderchief evolved into a conventional strike platform capable of carrying heavy bomb loads deep into hostile territory. The F-105F variant added a second cockpit for an electronic warfare officer, transforming the aircraft into one of the earliest and most important “Wild Weasel” platforms tasked with suppressing enemy air defenses.
  • Serial number 63-8299, known as “Peach 91,” served with the 128th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the Georgia Air National Guard, based at Dobbins Air Reserve Base. By the time it wore these markings in the early 1980s, the aircraft had already lived a long operational life. Many F-105Fs, including those that later served with Air National Guard units, had previously flown combat missions in Southeast Asia. During the Vietnam War, F-105F Wild Weasels hunted North Vietnamese surface-to-air missile sites, flying directly into heavily defended airspace to locate, identify, and neutralize radar-guided threats that endangered strike packages.
  • The Thunderchief’s combat record in Vietnam included participation in major air campaigns such as Operation Rolling Thunder and Linebacker, where Wild Weasel crews faced intense anti-aircraft fire and advanced Soviet-supplied missile systems. Aircraft like 63-8299 represent this dangerous mission profile, where crews relied on specialized equipment, anti-radiation missiles, and extraordinary courage to protect other aircraft in the strike formation. After their combat careers, surviving F-105Fs transitioned to training and reserve units, continuing to serve as valuable platforms for maintaining pilot proficiency and preserving the legacy of the Wild Weasel mission.
  • This 1:72 scale model commemorates both the aircraft’s Vietnam-era Wild Weasel heritage and its later service with the Georgia Air National Guard, making it a meaningful piece for collectors interested in Cold War and combat aviation history.
