  • HISTORY ASPECTS:
  • The Sherman Firefly was the British adaptation of the American M4 Sherman, rearmed with the powerful British 17-pounder anti-tank gun. The modification gave British and Commonwealth armored units a much greater ability to engage German Panther and Tiger tanks, whose heavy armor could be difficult for the standard 75mm Sherman to defeat at normal battle ranges. The Firefly retained the Sherman’s mobility and basic mechanical characteristics while incorporating a modified turret and ammunition arrangements to accommodate the longer, more powerful gun. Fireflies were therefore highly valued by British armored formations during the Normandy campaign.
  • The 24th Lancers were assigned to the 8th Armoured Brigade in February 1944 and landed in Normandy during Operation Overlord. The regiment came ashore at Gold Beach on June 6–7, supporting the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division, and soon became involved in fighting around Putot-en-Bessin and Villers-Bocage. Its Shermans subsequently fought through the battles around Tilly-sur-Seulles, Fontenay-le-Pesnel, Tessel Wood, and Rauray. A photograph of a Sherman VC Firefly belonging to the 24th Lancers near Saint-Léger on June 11, 1944, provides a particularly evocative record of the regiment's Firefly-equipped force in Normandy.
  • The 13th/18th Royal Hussars also operated Sherman tanks during the Normandy campaign, initially using Duplex Drive Shermans during the D-Day landings at Sword Beach. Their DD tanks supported the British assault and continued fighting in Normandy before the regiment transferred from the 27th Armoured Brigade to the 8th Armoured Brigade later in July. The regiment subsequently fought with the 8th Armoured Brigade through the campaign in Northwest Europe, eventually participating in operations leading to the Rhine crossings in 1945.
  • The 24th Lancers' Normandy service was intense and costly, and the regiment was disbanded in July 1944 after suffering heavy casualties and facing difficulties obtaining replacements. Its personnel were distributed among other armored regiments, including units within the 8th Armoured Brigade. The 13th/18th Hussars, meanwhile, remained with the brigade and continued the campaign beyond Normandy. Together, their histories illustrate the important role of British Sherman-equipped formations during Operation Overlord and the subsequent battles across Northwest Europe.
  • This 1:32 scale model is a striking tribute to one of the most recognizable Allied tanks of World War II. Its long 17-pounder gun and classic Sherman silhouette make it an excellent addition to collections focused on British armor, the Normandy campaign, or the battles of Northwest Europe. A detailed display piece for military history enthusiasts, this replica captures the distinctive appearance and battlefield importance of the Firefly during one of the defining campaigns of the Second World War.
