  • HISTORY ASPECTS:
  • The Boeing C-17A Globemaster III was developed to provide the United States Air Force with a unique combination of strategic and tactical airlift capability. Designed to carry troops, vehicles, palletized cargo, and other outsized loads, the C-17 can operate from relatively short and austere runways while also undertaking long-range intercontinental missions. The aircraft entered USAF service in the 1990s and became an important replacement for the aging C-141 Starlifter, combining the heavy-lift capability required for global mobility with the flexibility needed to support forces close to combat zones.
  • Boeing C-17A 07-7169, construction number 50180 and production number F179, was built at Long Beach, California, and was taken on strength by the U.S. Air Force in September 2007. It was delivered to Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, on October 2, 2007, joining the 3rd Airlift Squadron of the 436th Airlift Wing. The aircraft carries the distinctive “DOVER” tail marking and has also been operated in conjunction with the Air Force Reserve's 512th Airlift Wing at Dover.
  • The arrival of 07-7169 came during a major transformation at Dover. In 2007, the base was transitioning from an airlift operation centered on the enormous C-5 Galaxy to a mixed fleet that included the new C-17. The 3rd Airlift Squadron had flown its final C-5 mission in March 2007 before beginning its new C-17 era. Dover's first C-17 arrived in June, and over the following 15 months the base received a total of 13 Globemaster IIIs. The new aircraft brought a complementary tactical airlift capability to Dover while retaining the base's longstanding strategic mobility mission.
  • Dover's C-17 fleet quickly became heavily involved in worldwide operations. According to Dover Air Force Base, its C-17 crews supported Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom, transporting personnel, vehicles, supplies, and other cargo into and out of operational theaters. The aircraft also supported NATO humanitarian airlift operations and disaster-relief missions. 07-7169 itself has been documented on international missions, including a 2023 flight from Djibouti to Glasgow Prestwick while carrying the 436th/512th Airlift Wing markings. Its continuing activity demonstrates the global reach expected of a Dover-based Globemaster III.
  • This 1:400 scale model captures an aircraft closely associated with Dover's transition into the C-17 era. Its distinctive “DOVER” markings, four-engine Globemaster III configuration, and connection to worldwide military airlift operations make it an excellent addition to collections of U.S. Air Force aircraft, strategic airlifters, and modern military aviation.
