  • HISTORY ASPECTS:
  • The Boeing 717 was developed from the McDonnell Douglas MD-95 as a modern, efficient twin-engine jet for short- and medium-haul routes. After the Boeing–McDonnell Douglas merger, the aircraft was redesignated the Boeing 717-200. Hawaiian Airlines selected the type specifically for its demanding interisland network, ordering 13 aircraft in 1999 to replace its aging DC-9-50 fleet. The first Hawaiian 717 entered service in 2001, bringing a new generation of short-haul jet technology to flights between the Hawaiian Islands.
  • N494HA is a Boeing 717-2BL, manufacturer serial number 55182, built in 2004. The aircraft originally entered service as N920ME with Midwest Airlines and later flew for MexicanaClick and Volotea before joining Hawaiian Airlines. It was acquired by Boeing Capital Corporation in 2016 and subsequently entered Hawaiian service in February 2017, flying to Hawaii for its delivery and becoming part of the carrier's interisland fleet. Hawaiian named the aircraft “Kōaʻe Kea,” after the white-tailed tropicbird, a seabird commonly associated with the Hawaiian Islands.
  • The 717 became one of the defining aircraft of Hawaiian's Neighbor Island operation. Its size, quick turnaround capability, and suitability for frequent short flights made it particularly effective for connecting Honolulu with Kahului, Kona, Hilo, Lihue, and other Hawaiian destinations. Hawaiian had originally introduced its 717s to replace the DC-9s on interisland routes, and the aircraft eventually became the backbone of a high-frequency network that at times operated more than 160 flights per day. The airline also undertook a comprehensive interior refurbishment of its 717 fleet, introducing an island-inspired cabin and new lightweight seating.
  • N494HA has remained an active member of the fleet despite its age. In November 2023, the aircraft was involved in a ground incident at Kahului Airport when its left wing struck a tug during taxiing, causing substantial damage to the wing's leading edge. It was subsequently stored for repairs and returned to service in June 2024. Following the integration of Hawaiian Airlines into Alaska Airlines, the 717 continues to be used for Hawaiian interisland flying, with current flight records showing N494HA operating routes between Honolulu, Kahului, Kona, and Lihue under the Hawaiian brand.
  • This 1:400 scale model captures an aircraft that represents one of the most recognizable chapters in modern Hawaiian aviation. With the distinctive compact 717 profile, Hawaiian Airlines livery, and the Kōaʻe Kea name honoring Hawaii's native wildlife, this model makes an excellent addition to collections of Hawaiian Airlines aircraft, Boeing 717s, and the unique history of interisland air travel in Hawaii.
